The
Hot New Punks on the Block -- Off By One
by
Carole J. Brandi
You
may have heard that OFF BY ONE lead singer MARC GOULD
has a past with AVRIL LAVIGNE. Don't take his precious
pin-up down though -- their relationship is ancient
history! If he had his way about the whole thing, he
would have never disclosed it. "I hate being tagged
the 'skaterboy,'" he says.
Tags
or no tags, these guys are certainly worth singing about.
All hotties in their own right, this quartet has its
own piece of the punk pie and is now rocking audiences
across the country.
It
all started at Valhalla High School in San Diego, CA,
where the group used to jam for their buds. Friends
told friends, and next thing you know, the punk group
was born.
Their
debut album, Off By One, is an all-out celebration
of high school hijinks; that's why Go-Girl.com
Assistant Entertainment Editor Carole J. Brandi had
a great time sharing some food, fan fare, and fun with
these cuties. Listen in...
GG:
What were your favorite subjects in high school?
Trevor: History and creative writing.
Marc: English and history. I liked
science only from the perspective that I got to blow
stuff up.
Jon: I enjoyed math and English.
GG:
Do any of you aspire to go to college?
Jon: Definitely. I'd actually like
to go to the University of California San Diego.
Marc: I always wanted to go to learn
more.
GG:
What's
the deal with Avril not supporting the band now?
Marc: It's one of those gray areas
where you become really good friends with someone. I
dated her, but we were all best friends with her. We
hung out and recorded our albums together in Los Angeles.
She lived down the street from us. We all said we'd
help each other out. We'd say 'Check out our friend
Avril,' and she'd say 'Check out Off By One.' It's kind
of shocking to us that after she started to take off
we lost contact.
GG:
What
kind of jobs have you held while trying to make it in
the business?
Marc: I've been working since I was
15. I worked at a couple of surf shops, but selling
shoes at Nordstrom's was my main job. I was one of the
youngest salesmen -- I'm good at talking to people.
Jordan: I worked at a boat rental place
for a while. It was Adventure Water Sports (AWS).
Trevor: All of our friends worked at
AWS. I got paid off the books. It was awesome.
GG:
What
dream band would you want to jam with?
Marc: GREEN DAY
Jordan: WEEZER
Jon: RADIOHEAD
Trevor: I don't care who I
jam with.
GG:
How
did you feel about making your first album?
Trevor: It was pretty cool because
it was between our junior and senior year of high school.
We moved out of our houses for the whole summer and
lived in our own apartment in Los Angeles. We really
involved ourselves in the music. We got practice space
and could just jam. It was an all-around good learning
experience for us.
Marc: Our producers, The Matrix, were
so awesome -- they pulled the best out of us.
GG:
Your
CD is really great for working out.
Marc: We tried to keep the energy going
throughout the whole thing because we hate when we [listen
to other artists] and after the first four songs, it
goes downhill.
GG:
What
advice would you give our readers?
Jon: Don't give in to senioritis.
Marc: Be yourself.

More From These Four
|
1
- Biggest pet peeve:
Marc: I get annoyed when people
name drop -- it becomes a competition instead
of a conversation.
2 - Three
must-have-when-traveling CDs:
THE EXIT
JIMMY EAT WORLD PAT BENATAR
3
- Most embarrassing concert moment:
Marc: We have videos from our first
10 concerts, and they're embarrassing.
Trevor: I distinctly remember watching
those videos too and thinking they were
cool. I watch them now and they make me
want to barf.

- Best gift the band has ever received from
a fan: Pixi Stix

More
Tidbits
-
The band calls John's hair a wig.
-
Trevor has braces. "I've had them for
two years. I don't even think about it anymore."
-
Marc's job at Nordstrom's started in men's
shoes, then went to women's shoes. "I
was making really good money on commission
as a younger guy because all the women came
to me. It just got annoying wearing a suit
everyday."

No
Bassist = Band Name
Marc:
I met John through his older brother, and
we started jamming. Then we went over to
Trevor's house, and we all started playing
shows together, and we would say 'We don't
have a bass player. We have two guitar players,
a drummer, and we don't have a bass player,
so we're "off by one"' John always
had the band name in mind. It just fit.
Trevor:
Jordan was just a friend of John's and mine
from school. He was always hanging around
at practices. We said 'Play bass with us,
please.' He never played bass guitar, and
for a while he said he wasn't in the band.
He'd say 'Oh, I'm just a temporary,' and
then he bought a little junky bass amp.
Marc:
He just wanted to chase the band for girls!
